Ideal DJ Setup

In 2012, today’s professional DJs tend to be equally practiced in music production and the creation of their own tracks and sounds as in DJ mixing itself.

Mixing has quickly moved from vinyl turntables to CDJs and now, the latest DJ Controllers are proving to be highly creative, popular and useful tools.

2012 Ideal DJ Setup

So as the new year dawns so does the new age of the Digital DJ where the ideal DJ Setup is part mixing, with a high quality DJ Controller like the Traktor Kontrol S2 or S4 and part music production with Ableton Live and a Keyboard Midi Controller like the Novation SL MkII.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4

The Traktor Kontrol S4 has taken the DJ world by storm and changed the whole ball game. Before the S4 came along, DJ Controllers weren’t taken too seriously by most professional DJ’s. It’s been all about Pioneer CDJ’s, Mixers and Technics Turntables. But now with the introduction of the Traktor S4 even Pioneer has come rushing in with their own line of high quality DJ Controllers.

But what Native Instruments has done is that they not only to made a DJ Controller that matched the high quality of Pioneer CDJ’s and a DJ Mixer they also added some very innovative additional features and functionality to really take DJing to a new level.

    MacBook 13inch or 15inch?
Would one or the other make a difference in portability and/or capacity?

    • Hi Nelz,

You can definitely expect performance from all of the MacBook Pro laptops that are currently available. Starting at 500 GB you will have plenty of space for lots of music.

For portability, 13 inch is a good size and for running and viewing DJ software like Traktor and Serato it’s totally sufficient.

However, if you’re going to be working in Ableton producing your own tracks, then the 15 inch display will be really nice.

Personally, I’m currently using 13 inch but am planning to go for a 15 inch MacBook Pro for my next laptop.

Basically, I think it goes to personal choice and your budget. Even the base 13 inch MacBook Pro is a high performance and highly capable machine that’s perfect for DJing.

I just recently got the Traktor S2 and I am running it on a MacBook. I can run everything fine until I start playing two songs together and get into chopping. Once I start chopping there is slight lag in my system.

I have been doing some research and have asked around. Someone has suggested getting a FireWire, someone else has suggested upgrading my RAM from 2 gigs to 4 gigs. Do you have any suggestions or any information to help me out?

    • Hi Francisco,

That sounds like a laptop problem. Totally upgrade the RAM. It’s doesn’t cost much and will make a huge difference in the performance of your MacBook.

        Hi Francisco,
That sounds like a laptop problem. Totally upgrade the RAM. It’s doesn’t cost much and will make a huge difference in the performance of your MacBook.

Thats what I thought it was. Would you recommend just getting a macbook pro? By the way thank you a lot for getting back to my post so quickly. I’m becoming a huge fan of your blog.

        • Sure, upgrading from MacBook to MacBook Pro is desirable, but also quite costly.

For about $50 you can upgrade the RAM on your MacBook and it will run so much better and should solve your lag problems. I’ve done this exact same thing myself — upgraded stock RAM of 1GB with 2 X 2GB modules of RAM and everything ran faster and smoother.

I bought Transcend RAM, but I just looked at Amazon and see that Mac users are getting very good results with this Crucial Ram Kit.

It’s easy to do on your own:

Another good tip for owners of older white MacBooks — if the casing around the keyboard has cracked at all, Apple sees this as a defect and will replace the keyboard and surrounding casing, as well as, the plastic that goes around the screen for free.

So for just a few bucks, an older MacBook can seem like a new computer in both appearance and operation.
