For me the biggest factor is how they sound but of course comfort is also a factor, as well as styling, build quality and isolation. Pioneer HDJ-1000 DJ Headphones

I’ve used the Pioneer HDJ-1000′s extensively for DJing. What I like about the Pioneer HDJ-1000′s is the sound. When I first listened to them I was like…. WOW. Loved the sound, rich, warm, clear highs and mids and really deep base, definitely the deepest, strongest base I’ve heard in any headphone. This can be very helpful to a beginning DJ when mixing and beat matching because the beats really stand out. Plus, they play loud and clear without any distortion.

As for comfort, yes they’re comfortable when I’m DJing a gig as I’m taking them on and off when I play. But for long periods, like the hours you’ll spend searching and listening to new music, after a couple hours they start to feel a bit tight as these are on-ear headphones. When I’m in that mode, I use Bose Triport Around-Ear headphones which are more of an audiophile headphone than a DJ headphone that are lightweight, comfortable and great for traveling.

This is another pair of headphones that you’ll see on many big-name DJ’s especially techno and tech house DJ’s. What I love about the HD25′s and why I’ve considered buying a pair for myself is the comfort. They’re very lightweight on-ear headphones that fit very comfortably on your head and ears. If you want to monitor with one ear, it’s easy to pop the other ear cup behind your ear. The Sennheiser HD25′s isolation from outside noise is superior to most headphones, making them ideal club DJ headphones.

The build construction is very durable and they don’t break easily. Even if they do become damaged, virtually every part on them is replaceable. I’ve read about DJ’s who have kept there Sennheiser HD25′s alive for years by replacing any part that gets damaged. The split headband with a wide range of adjustment makes the HD25-1 II’s an easy fit for most any head size, and their lightweight construction makes them more comfortable than most even when worn for long periods of time. Clear, detailed treble, punchy mids and deep bass make them perfect for DJ or studio use. Where the Pioneer may give you a boost in the bass, Sennheiser creates more accurate sound reproduction. That goes to personal choice.

TMA-1 DJ Headphones have really hit the world by storm and not only for Pro DJ’s but also for audiophiles who want excellent sound and a clean design. The sound is warm and rich and the AIAIAI TMA-1′s fit comfortably on your head. Designed by DJs for DJ’s, the TMA-1′s have a minimalists design and are made from rugged matte black nylon.

When I listened to these, I was really impressed with the sound. It was like, WOW, these are really nice and the sound really is superb. The bass was deep and solid but not overbearing and the highs and mids were crisp and clear, making for extremely well-balanced, warm and vibrant sound.

Another very popular pair of headphones for professional DJ’s and people I know are the Technics RP-DJ1200A’s. They’re lightweight and comfortable with good quality sound. The last time my HDJ-1000’s broke, I borrowed these from the other DJ to finish off the gig who later had to borrow my cd’s when his Serato crashed. Like the HD25′s, the Technics RP-DJ1200A headphones are a sleek and more compact headphone. The Technics RP-DJ1200A’s have a wide frequency range and deliver good bass similar to the HD25′s and nothing like the extra oomph you get from Pioneer. Many people love these as the unique folding swing arms swivel 270 degrees, allowing one-sided monitoring, or almost any configuration you like.

These are the headphones on Dennis Ferrer’s head in this ‘Hey Hey’ promo video. The Technics RP-DH1200′s are big headphones with cool-looking deck design and bright shiny ear cups have made them a common sight on DJ’s heads. The sound of the Technics RP-DH1200′s is excellent, with an extensive range of frequency giving them plenty of bass, clear highs and well defined mids.

Sony MDR-V700 DJ Headphones

Perhaps the best selling DJ Headphones are the Sony MDR-V700′s. Of course, Sony is a well-known brand particularly for consumer products, so when people first begin looking for headphones Sony is easy to find. The Sony MDR-V700′s seem to be a good lower cost option. However, be warned that people tend to complain about the durability and the silver paint flaking off the plastic components. In my opinion these sit on the border of consumer and professional. However, one of my favorite top DJ’s uses these and I think a lot of beginners may start out with the Sony MDR-V700′s. I’d recommend checking out the user reviews at Amazon before buying.

Conclusion

Tips for selecting the best DJ headphones:

Sound quality: The sound quality should be crisp and clear with no distortion at loud volumes or muddied with strong bass. You should be able to easily differentiate between highs, mids and lows and I personally like the bass to be a little punchy.

Isolation: The sound coming from your headphones should be heard clearly without outside noise entering. In a loud club environment, you should hear the music you are searching for and cueing up separately from the music playing in club.

Comfort: You want headphones that are comfortable and feel good on your head and your ears. When I DJ, I typically take my headphones off and put them back on as I mix and play. So it’s also important that they feel comfortable around my neck. However, many DJs like to keep their headphones on continuously with one ear on and one ear off making it important that the ear cup swivels, turns, folds or simply sits nicely on your head behind your ear when you want to listen to your headphones with one ear and the monitor with the other.

Build quality: Obviously, you want a pair of headphones that won’t break easily. When you spend a few bucks for good high quality sound you want headphones that will last. You also want them to be easy to transport. Most DJ headphones fold up nicely and slip into an included bag or case.

Although it may be designed for the intermediate DJ, the Pioneer CDJ-350 and DJM-350 are full of features you would find on the more advanced CDJ-2000, we’re reviewing them as a package but are of course available individually.

In terms of uses the Pioneer CDJ-350 is very much value for money when you consider just how much you’re getting from a cheaper product in the pioneer range. It can also handle most audio formats you can throw at it as its MP3, WAV and AIFF, from either CD or USB. When hooked up to a computer it not only acts as a MIDI controller for your essential music and DJ software but also as an audio interface.

In terms of setup, two Pioneer CDJ-350′s along with the Pioneer DJM-350 looks good, compact and easy to assemble and perhaps most importantly the cheapest Pioneer CDJ’s with the Rekordbox feature. They have however sacrificed density for the low price and at first feels quite flimsy, but it just takes a bit of getting used to.

Pioneer CDJ-350 & DJM-350 Guide

One of the new features of the Pioneer CDJ-350 allows you to create and edit playlists on the go saving straight onto a USB device. Also the new Rekordbox software figures out the BPM and beat position for every song you have. Simply save the tracks you want for a set onto a USB device and then you can select them by album, artist or genre. The Rekordbox then makes it even easier for you with the BPM lock feature. When pressed the speed of each track that is playing will match the master BPM that you set so no more excuses for messing up a mix! Other functions include; up a beat display, auto beat loop, loop divide and hot loop.

In addition to these, you get a bookmark feature that remembers where you were up to on a CD when it’s removed, and then starts from where it was when you return it. A clever feature is the beat indicator on screen, which shows a bar moving through each beat. And also perhaps most crucial of all, a Shock-Proof memory and a floating architecture that prevents a DJ’s worst nightmare of the CD skipping when the decks get knocked or the volume is turned up to the max.

When you get right down to it, it’s the sound that matters which is why Pioneer haven’t compromised anything in this department. With signal processing handled by the units capable of 48kHz/24-bit digital signal processor and the analogue sound converted via the shortest of circuits so the mixer looses nothing along the way. So you get no unwanted noise and crystal clear sound.

For the DJ’s wishing to record their sets, simply hit the ‘track mark’ button and your perfect mixes will be indexed and ready to burn on to CD without making a single edit. Or drag and drop your files into the Rekordbox software and your music will be automatically primed with beatgrids to take advantage of the CDJ-350’s beat-keeping tools.

Bought as individual products they’re good but when purchased as a set the Pioneer CDJ-350?s along with the Pioneer DJM-350 becomes a high quality setup that’s nightclub quality for personal prices. Well recommended.

With all of the hype, of course I was wondering, are Beats by Dr. Dre worth it? Are Monster Beats by Dre any good?

When I did finally give Monster Beats by Dr. Dre a try, I was actually very impressed by the excellent sound quality. In further researching what Beats are all about, I’ve found that Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, record producer and current chairman/CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, paired up to make Beats in order to put high quality audio, music sounding they way artists intended it to sound, back out on the streets. Let’s start with the overall look. It’s really cool and beautiful looking and I can easily see the Pioneer DDJ-ERGO selling like hotcakes out of Apple stores everywhere. In fact, it’s designed with a laptop dock so that it sits over the keyboard with the screen in the same view as the controller itself. That’s a real space saver and I think it just really makes sense for ease of use for the controller to integrate with the laptop so well.

The smooth space-age design with contoured edges, white lower and black slanted upper is really attractive and ergonomic at the same time. The illuminating pulse control LED lights aren’t there just to look cool but actually make it easier to learn to mix, so easy – even an amateur can be sounding good in no time.

The Pulse Control adds a visual dimension to your mixing and performance that not only looks cool but also helps you to get your mixing just right.

• Mix Pulse – The pulse of the blue LED on the jogwheel helps you to get the pitches (speed) matched when mixing. The closer the pitches are to matching the stronger the light pulse.
• Beat Pulse – The LED lights in the channel faders with glow stronger with the increase of output levels.

The jog wheels are large 115mm platters similar to Pioneer Pro DJ equipment and the layout is similar to the premium pro level DDJ-T1 and DDJ-S1 DJ controllers. Everything is well-spaced, metallic play and cue buttons on the left with the pitch control, vinyl mode, keylock and sync buttons on the right.

Above the jog wheels you have all the effects, cue and sample controls you could want. In the center there are all the mixing controls, faders, filters, hi, mid, low, gain and even the ability to flip between four decks. There is a dial and load buttons to navigate and access your music library without touching your laptop.

I have a feeling that Twitch will be in high demand and possibly sell-out, especially at such a reasonable price point for a professional quality DJ controller.

Initially skeptical of a DJ Controller without jog wheels, I’m now quite sold on the idea given Twitch’s compact efficiency and creative capabilities. I’m personally in the market for a new DJ Controller and think this could be the one.

I typically play and perform on Pioneer CDJs and a Mixer but I want a controller I can travel with and use whenever I‘m feeling it. Novation Twitch is about the size of a 15-inch laptop and has the look, feel and function of a solid professional’s tool. It’s been developed with Serato and comes with Serato Itch, the included DJ software known for it’s stability, but can just as easily be used with Traktor or Ableton Live.

It’s a perfect solution to carry along everywhere I go, use to mix anywhere I want and use as an additional DJ tool to enhance performances with the ‘slicer mode’ when I play gigs on CDJ. I’d just plug it into the third or fourth channel of the mixer along with two CDJs and mix between the three.

Twitch has been developed with Digital DJing in mind and has challenged the notion that music goes round. Sure, vinyl records go round but does digital music? Twitch shows us the truth – digital music is non-linear and can be played from any point at any moment.

Touchstrips

I’ll begin here because this was for obvious reasons one of the first question I had in my mind. Touchstrips for Jog wheels, does it work? Can I manually mix with touchstrips rather than using the sync button that I personally prefer to avoid?

Well, quite simply the answer is YES. The touchstrips are an excellent innovation and cover all the functionality of jogwheels and then some. Navigating a track and selecting cue points can be done quickly and intuitively and because the touchstrip, faders and pads are all within a finger’s reach, exploiting all of Twitch’s capabilities becomes compelling and intuitive all at once.

Performance Mode and Trigger Pads

Using Twitch’s ‘slicer mode’ combined with Serato Itch’s powerful ‘beatgrids’ system, you can quickly slice up tracks into eight parts and remix and rearrange them on the fly using the ‘trigger pads’ while remaining in perfect time. You can also manually set eight ‘hot cue’ points to be fired off at any time, as well as powerful looping capabilities. This can bring a whole new element to any DJ’s performances offering immense creative choices.

Mixer with Fader FX

With the addition of the trigger pads and the substitution of the touchstrips in place of jog wheels, Twitch has all of the features you would find in a professional DJ mixer and controls over twelve powerful effects in Itch, phaser, flanger, delay, echo, reverb, LPF, HPF, repeater, crusher, reverser, tremelo, and braker.

For mixing, Novation Twitch has channel faders, trim, cross-fader and tone controls that can also be assigned to work as effects controllers. Beatmatching can be done using Itch to sync tracks together in perfect time simply by pressing the ‘sync’ button or can be done manually utilizing Twitch’s unique touchstrips and trim dial.

Serato Itch

Serato Itch DJ software is included with Twitch. Twitch has been developed with Serato to ensure maximum compatibility with Itch. However, Twitch will also work well with Traktor and even comes with a Traktor overlay in the box. Construction – Durability – Portability

While many DJ Controllers come across as toy like, this is NOT the case with Twitch. Twitch is a serious DJ tool in a compact package. Rough and ready to go anywhere, Twitch is compact enough to fit in a laptop bag while feeling solid and sturdy at the same time. I think this is one of the big advantages of Twitch and think a lot of DJs may buy it for a portable Controller they can pull out of their laptop bag and use anywhere and everywhere.

The top panel is made of aluminum with color backlit rubber button pads. The knobs and faders are solid and move well ensuring that Twitch plays like a musical instrument should. Although compact, the ergonomics are excellent.

Professional’s Tool

There’s no doubt that Twitch is a tool designed to do a job. Combined with Serato’s solid and powerful Itch DJ software and unique ‘beatgrid’ and ‘slicer mode’ functionality, the job of entertaining has just become a whole lot more fun and creative. I’m totally digging Twitch and congratulate Novation for reinventing the wheel so to speak. Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2

Native Instruments has also recently introduced the Traktor Kontrol S2. The S2 is a 2-deck controller being sold at a more economical price point compared with the S4. Just like the S4, the Traktor Kontrol S2 is very solid and robust and may appeal to DJs looking for an even more compact solution. Where the S4 may be just a little large for your rucksack the S2 should fit right in.

Best of all, for a few bucks less (actually less than half the price of S4 with current price drop promotion), you still get all of the features that have made the S4 a total game changing DJ Controller like the trigger buttons for Traktor Pro 2′s powerful sample decks, loops, and cue points. You also get the same high quality electromagnetic jog wheels and, while the Traktor Kontrol S2 is a two deck DJ controller it has a third channel for the sample decks. Conclusion

There are some excellent DJ Controllers here to suit just about any and every DJ’s needs. The Traktor Kontrol S4 and Traktor Kontrol S2 are my personal picks as you can use the Traktor Controllers to really push both Traktor and yourself to the limit of creative DJing. I also like the size of the Traktor Kontrol S4, big enough and feature rich to not feel too cumbersome, while the Traktor S2 is compact enough to travel with in almost any carry-on bag.

However, I’m also attracted to the Pioneer Controllers because the layout, buttons and controls are so similar to using Pioneer CDJ’s and a Mixer. Right away, this would be the most comfortable and intuitive system for me to play on. Both the Pioneer DDJ-T1 DJ Controller and the Pioneer DDJ-S1 DJ Controller are excellent high quality DJ Controllers giving the DJ a spacious, Club-like control and action. Pioneer’s club-standard durability is tops, built to take regular nightly abuse from DJ after DJ.

The Pioneer DJ Controllers are the best choice for Clubs or DJ’s that want to play at home on similar equipment that they will be utilizing at the club in their performances. Another thing that I really love about the Pioneer Controllers is that your laptop docks with the keyboard beneath the controller, putting the Controller and Computer Screen in the same view – this really makes perfect sense to me. If you’re a beginner, then check out the new Pioneer DDJ-ERGO.

The Allen & Heath Xone DX Controller is full-featured, compact sized and works well with both Serato Itch and Traktor. Serato is also doing a lot of collaboration with Ableton, which is certainly worth keeping a close eye on and could make for a very powerful combination for creating superstar performances.

For the inexpensive options, I like the Hercules RMX DJ Console mostly for it’s more durable construction. The casing is metal and it has all the features of a basic 2-deck DJ set-up. For a few more bucks, the Hercules DJ Console 4-MX is also worth checking out. I’m a little concerned that although the Numark MIXTRACK PRO is well loved and has cool light up buttons and larger jog wheels, the plastic casing may make it feel a bit toy like. But I suppose having toys and having fun is what it’s all about.

All of the DJ Controllers I’ve mentioned here have built-in soundcards. One of the main advantages to a DJ Controller is to have one piece of equipment, well integrated to work seamlessly with your DJ Software on your computer. Having to buy a separate sound card will drive your overall price up to perhaps more that what a DJ Controller with a built-in soundcard will cost you, so it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

With the DJ world going more and more digital everyday, DJ Controllers are becoming an excellent choice for any DJ. For me, like many, I love the idea of not having to burn CD’s and it’s so much easier to stay organized with your music and playlists in your computer. Sometimes I feel like I have two DJ minds, one with the music in my computer and one with the music on my CD’s and bringing those two minds together can be a bit of a headache. Because of this and other advantages, Digital DJing and DJing with DJ Mixing Software Programs and DJ Controllers are becoming increasingly popular choices everyday for all types of DJ’s.
