In 2012 a number of well-known DJs were “kicked off the decks” at a couple different high class night clubs.

Big names like DJ Shadow, Tommie Sunshine, Dennis Ferrer, and Mark Farina to name a few were all asked to leave for one reason or another but the main theme was that someone didn’t think their music fit the venue. Although the vast majority of us would side with the DJs in each of these cases their experiences bring up the opportunity to learn a good lesson. While the main job of a DJ is typically defined as playing music or running the decks, an equally important responsibly is to play music in such a way that you enhance the club atmosphere. Here are a few tips I’ve come up with to help any aspiring DJ better fit their set to the club or venue they intend to play.

Play the right venue, on the right night.

Understanding the type of venue you’re going to play and the crowds that venue attracts on any given night is absolutely critical to your success as a DJ. Become familiar with the club you’re going to play. If you’re able to try attending a few weeks in advance on the nights you’re going to play. This will give you an idea what type of music you should play. Also inquire about how the gig will be advertised. If you’re not down to play some commercial top 40 songs then you shouldn’t take a gig that is advertised as being. Catering your music to the feel of the club or the audience is your number one priority as a DJ.

Act friendly towards club staff, managers, and owners.

Before you book a date at a club or venue it’d be in your best interested to communicate with the clubs owner or booking staff. Learn their names and get to know them as best you can. The friendlier you are the better chance these same staff members will be on your side if anything goes down. This will help prevent you from getting kicked off the decks, at least without ample warning. The nicer you are with the staff the more likely they will be to help you out and inform you of any issues before they become a serious problem.

Don’t be afraid to change things up.

No one likes static so if the set you planned isn’t working out the way you thought it would, change things up. Whether you want to or not you will get feedback from club owners, VIPs, and regular audience members.  Like water off a duck’s back you should be ready to roll with the punches. Use positive feedback to reinforce the vision you had for your set, but don’t let negative feedback derail your beat train. If you have a good feel for the type of club and audience you’re going to be playing for you should bring an ample amount of reserve tracks. If something experimental isn’t going over so well migrate towards music that’s more commercial, and vice versa. The lesson here is to learn from crowd feedback.

If kicked off the decks stay cooler than ice.

As a DJ your reputation is the most important asset. Once you tarnish that it will take ten times more work to rebuild what you’ve broken. If an overstepping manager or hot headed club owner kicks you off the decks don’t fret. It is okay to say goodnight to the crowd but don’t make a scene. And remember the club goers or audience may not be cool with the fact that you’ve been asked to step down. Handling it with a cool head, in a mature manner is the best way to motivate your crowd to defend you.

Try, try, try again!

Don’t let one bad performance be your last. Whether a bad performance is due to not being on you’re a-game, equipment malfunction, or a crowd that simply wants something different. Don’t let that be the end of your career. Learn from your experience and determine to make your next gig better. Employ the lessons you’ve learned and use each experience to better your skillset as a DJ. Like water a DJ needs to know how to flow. So flow with whatever you’re handed and make the best of it!

Serato DJ users will have access to brand new effects powered by iZotope, renowned for their professional quality in sound. There are two effects units that can be routed through your available channels or the master.

There are ten high quality effects to choose from including delay, echo, reverb, phaser, flanger, low pass filter, high pass filter, combo high pass and low pass filter, distortion and ping pong delay.

Innovative High Performance Decks

The new decks on the Pioneer DDJ-SX are nothing short of revolutionary. Rather than being laid out in a mirror image like many other DJ controllers, the DDJ-SX decks are identical – meaning that the pitch faders are on the right, play buttons on the left just like Pioneer Pro DJ gear and resembling the new Pioneer CDJ-2000 Nexus including the needle search function to navigate to any place within the current track with just a touch.

Jog Wheels – DDJ-SX ‘Big Jogs’

The jog wheels are large, capacitive touch sensitive (like the touch on an ipad screen) and have an illuminated jog display in the center so you know just where you are in the “record.” The jogs on the DDJ-SX feature the shortest control latency – the time between touch and signal to software — of any DJ controller making the DDJ-SX a top choice for scratch DJs or any DJ that wants simultaneous accuracy jog control.

Performance Pads

Four-Channel Mixer

Choose from master out XLRs or RCAs with TRS booth outs and inputs for four channels including phone/line, CD, and Mic. There is a Kensington lock, USB socket, Standby/On button and DC in with a plastic cable hook.

Pioneer DDJ-ERGO

The Pioneer DDJ-ERGO is a brilliant DJ controller with all the right curves in all the right places. It’s designed with a laptop dock so that it sits over the keyboard with the screen in the same view as the controller itself. That’s a real space saver and I think it just really makes sense for ease of use for the controller to integrate with the laptop so well.

The DDJ-ERGO is probably the nicest looking controller of the group and is also the most spacious full-sized controller that feels most like DJing on high-end Pioneer professional club DJ equipment.

The layout of the Pioneer DDJ-ERGO best represents that of DJing on Pioneer Pro DJ gear and differs from many controllers that have the pitch faders on the outside of the controller, like a mirror image. Which DJ controller is right for you?

For the best and most inexpensive beginner DJ controller, my top picks are the new Denon MC2000 and the new Pioneer DDJ-WeGO. Both of these new budget DJ controllers are awesome and affordable and pack a big punch with professional quality sound, design and full-featured functionality. Both the Pioneer WeGO and the Denon MC2000 are very portable, making them appealing to beginner and more experienced DJs that want an ultra-portable, lightweight DJ controller they can slip into a sling bag or backpack with their laptop and take anywhere they go — from house party to club to after party and be DJing in moments, as easy as plug and play.

Let me just point out that the Denon MC2000 is built for and comes with Serato DJ Intro whereas the DDJ-WeGO has a customized version of Virtual DJ and Serato Intro. For me, it’s a tough choice, I love the round the jog ergonomics of the DDJ-WeGO. The WeGO is an inexpensive DJ controller, currently selling for less than the Denon MC2000, with Pioneer Pro quality making it a great deal and an excellent value.

However, I like the Denon MC2000 because of the durable metal build and the software choice of Serato DJ Intro that should be upgradeable to the new Serato DJ in the coming months.

For Traktor Pro DJ software and for a step up in pricing, there are three solid choices. Of course, the Traktor Kontrol S2 is made by Traktor for Traktor so hardware and software integration is perfect, and for those that will utilize the launch pads for samples, hot cues and looping, it’s the one to get.

If you want more versatility and a bit of a bargain, the Denon MC3000 is priced to sell these days. You can use it with any software — it’s been optimized for Virtual DJ (included in US) and Traktor Pro (Traktor LE included in EU). The Denon MC3000 is built like a tank, the one controller most like Denon or Pioneer pro DJ gear in build quality.

Then there is the Pioneer DDJ-ERGO Traktor Edition in red and black that ships with Traktor LE. The Pioneer DDJ-ERGO is a full-sized DJ controller and the most spacious of all of the DJ controllers featured here while also being lightweight and very portable.

The original Pioneer DDJ-ERGO has been a big hit. It ships with a customized version of Virtual DJ or you can use it with a free download of Serato DJ Intro. The ERGO definitely wins the design award with super features and should also be upgradeable to a full version of Serato DJ in the near future.

Novation Twitch is in a league of it’s own and is the only DJ controller here that ships with Serato Itch DJ Software which is a much more powerful version of Serato than Serato DJ Intro. Novation Twitch also comes with a Traktor overlay and is compatible with Traktor and Ableton. It’s really a new and innovative twist on DJing with touch strips instead of jog wheels and with Serato Itch’s beatgrids and slicer mode, Novation Twitch gives DJs the power to remix tracks on the fly. This is a pro’s tool and a DJ controller for ambitious beginner DJ/producers that is currently priced in the same ball park as the Denon MC2000 and the Pioneer DDJ-WeGO.

Now we get to the ultra budget options, the Numark Mixtrack Pro and the Hercules RMX and siblings RMX2 and 4-MX. The Numark Mixtrack Pro is great for new DJs that want to get their feet wet without spending too much. It’s definitely a beginners DJ controller that is easy to learn and get going with right away. A lot of guys really love this controller and it has all the functionality you need to get started.

The Hercules RMX is one of the very first DJ controllers — a vanguard in the movement and a favorite of many. Built to last, Hercules DJ controllers now come in a few flavors. The RMX was the first — it has a lot of big plusses but lacks in the jog wheel department. The Hercules RMX2 is brand new and greatly improved featuring great quality jogs and velocity touch pads. The Hercules 4-MX is a great DJ controller for those that want four deck control at an affordable price.

XDJ-AERO in Play

Once you have recordbox on your device, you can simply hit load to sync up with your recordbox library on your computer. Then you’ll have all the music from your computers recordbox library on your smartphone.

When you turn on the XDJ-AERO it emits a wifi signal and creates an ad hoc network. This means it’s really stable. Nothing can hack into this or connect to the wireless connection without permission. So no other smartphone can link in unless they’ve got the password assigned to the XDJ-AERO.

On the player you can select recordbox and connect the deck directly to your smartphone. The XDJ-AERO deck is literally going to scan through the music on the recordbox mobile app – completely wireless, zero latency and zero lag. The communication between devices is instantaneous via N connection and is as good as being hardwired in.

With one device you can load two tracks – one for each deck. You can control the music from a smartphone from both player decks and connect an additional three devices. You could connect one smartphone, one laptop and two iPads or any combinations of any of these devices.

From the DJM Mixer series, the four popular beat effects are loaded into each player; Trans, Flanger, Echo and Roll. The beat effects are all hardware based. Now the really cool thing about these effects is their quantized as well so this basically means the effects are reading the bpm of the track. If you turn on echo and slow down the track the echo slows down with it insuring the effects never go out of time with the bpm of the track that’s playing.

Another cool feature is sample launch that as you’d expect lets us load up a sample onto the CDJ-player platter, onto the 150 millimeter jogweel. There’s a selection of four samples that can be loaded and played: scratch, horn, siren or laser that can also be manipulation with the beat effects.

The platter on the jog wheel can even be used as a drum pad — touch sensitive jog pad. This is a fun feature giving DJs another element of creativity increasing the overall fun-factor. You can punch and scratch on the fly.

If you don’t use the recordbox platform or the recordbox mobile app this can be used just like any other DJ controller on the market. You can connect it via usb to a laptop and control any popular DJ software programs. You can also play directly from usb using the usb port and record to usb as well if you’re playing wirelessly. So you can record your set directly from the unit.

Both the Pioneer RMX-1000 and the Traktor F1 are super-cool new tools for remixing on the fly but which one is for you?

Actually they’re quite different tools. The Traktor F1 is more for adding and manipulating a seemingly unending plethora of sounds while I see the RMX-1000 as a very tactile performance FX unit.

If you’re already a Traktor DJ, the F1 is obviously a welcome addition for you. If you’re considering getting started with Traktor this could be another great reason—there’s just so much power and potential and so many possibilities to create incredible DJ performances with Traktor.

For DJs that are used to playing on Pioneer gear, the RMX-1000 Remix Station is like a brand new toy to add to their arsenal and I think we’ll see it become a standard installation in any club of caliber.

The latest version of Traktor Pro 2 DJ software simply rocks. It has really taken on the DJ software world and put itself on top as the most used DJ software today. With so many improvements like the color waveforms, rock solid performance and new sample decks there is no better time to DJ with Traktor Pro 2. And it only gets better when controlled by Native Instruments own Traktor Kontrol S2 DJ controller giving the DJ perfect integration between software and hardware.

I should also mention that data is transferred between controller, computer and software at a rate of 30 times more than standard MIDI protocol used by most other DJ controllers. This simply makes for lightning quick response and connection between computer and controller.

Layout – Feel & Play

The Traktor Kontrol S2 layout is basically two decks and a mixer with a third channel for samples and loops plus hot cue trigger buttons and controls for 32 powerful effects.

High Quality Electromagnetic Jog Wheels

The jog wheels on the S2 are high quality electromagnetic jog wheels offering the same or better feel and performance than most professional CDJs. The high sensitivity is at a resolution of 1000 points per revolution with quick and accurate responsiveness. The top of the platter is touch sensitive and switch activated.

Mixer, Faders, Knobs

The ergonomics of the mixer section are intuitive and comfortable for such a compact DJing solution. For best DJ headphones on a budget, I’m going to have to go with the Technics 1200A’s currently coming in at just under a hundred bucks at Amazon.

Pioneer HDJ-1000 DJ Headphones

I’ve used the Pioneer HDJ-1000′s extensively for DJing. What I like about the Pioneer HDJ-1000′s is the sound. When I first listened to them I was like…. WOW. Loved the sound, rich, warm, clear highs and mids and really deep base, definitely the deepest, strongest base I’ve heard in any headphone. This can be very helpful to a beginning DJ when mixing and beat matching because the beats really stand out. Plus, they play loud and clear without any distortion.

As for comfort, yes they’re comfortable when I’m DJing a gig as I’m taking them on and off when I play. But for long periods, like the hours you’ll spend searching and listening to new music, after a couple hours they start to feel a bit tight as these are on-ear headphones. When I’m in that mode, I use Bose Triport Around-Ear headphones which are more of an audiophile headphone than a DJ headphone that are lightweight, comfortable and great for traveling.

Sennheiser HD25-1 II DJ Headphones

This is another pair of headphones that you’ll see on many big-name DJ’s especially techno and tech house DJ’s. What I love about the HD25′s and why I’ve considered buying a pair for myself is the comfort. They’re very lightweight on-ear headphones that fit very comfortably on your head and ears. If you want to monitor with one ear, it’s easy to pop the other ear cup behind your ear. The Sennheiser HD25′s isolation from outside noise is superior to most headphones, making them ideal club DJ headphones.

The build construction is very durable and they don’t break easily. Even if they do become damaged, virtually every part on them is replaceable. I’ve read about DJ’s who have kept there Sennheiser HD25′s alive for years by replacing any part that gets damaged. The split headband with a wide range of adjustment makes the HD25-1 II’s an easy fit for most any head size, and their lightweight construction makes them more comfortable than most even when worn for long periods of time. Clear, detailed treble, punchy mids and deep bass make them perfect for DJ or studio use. Where the Pioneer may give you a boost in the bass, Sennheiser creates more accurate sound reproduction. That goes to personal choice.

AIAIAI TMA-1 DJ Headphones

TMA-1 DJ Headphones have really hit the world by storm and not only for Pro DJ’s but also for audiophiles who want excellent sound and a clean design. The sound is warm and rich and the AIAIAI TMA-1′s fit comfortably on your head. Designed by DJs for DJ’s, the TMA-1′s have a minimalists design and are made from rugged matte black nylon.

When I listened to these, I was really impressed with the sound. It was like, WOW, these are really nice and the sound really is superb. The bass was deep and solid but not overbearing and the highs and mids were crisp and clear, making for extremely well-balanced, warm and vibrant sound.

Another very popular pair of headphones for professional DJ’s and people I know are the Technics RP-DJ1200A’s. They’re lightweight and comfortable with good quality sound. The last time my HDJ-1000’s broke, I borrowed these from the other DJ to finish off the gig who later had to borrow my cd’s when his Serato crashed. Like the HD25′s, the Technics RP-DJ1200A headphones are a sleek and more compact headphone. The Technics RP-DJ1200A’s have a wide frequency range and deliver good bass similar to the HD25′s and nothing like the extra oomph you get from Pioneer. Many people love these as the unique folding swing arms swivel 270 degrees, allowing one-sided monitoring, or almost any configuration you like.

Technics RP-DH1200 DJ Headphones

These are the headphones on Dennis Ferrer’s head in this ‘Hey Hey’ promo video. The Technics RP-DH1200′s are big headphones with cool-looking deck design and bright shiny ear cups have made them a common sight on DJ’s heads. The sound of the Technics RP-DH1200′s is excellent, with an extensive range of frequency giving them plenty of bass, clear highs and well defined mids.

Sony MDR-V700 DJ Headphones

Perhaps the best selling DJ Headphones are the Sony MDR-V700′s. Of course, Sony is a well-known brand particularly for consumer products, so when people first begin looking for headphones Sony is easy to find. The Sony MDR-V700′s seem to be a good lower cost option. However, be warned that people tend to complain about the durability and the silver paint flaking off the plastic components. In my opinion these sit on the border of consumer and professional. However, one of my favorite top DJ’s uses these and I think a lot of beginners may start out with the Sony MDR-V700′s. I’d recommend checking out the user reviews at Amazon before buying.

Conclusion

When it comes to the best DJ headphones, you definitely get what you pay for. However, for both value and quality, all of the DJ headphones listed above will make a good choice depending on your needs and budget.

If you’re an aspiring DJ just getting started or you just don’t want to spend too much on DJ headphones, I’d personally go for the Pioneer HDJ-1000′s or the Technics RP-DJ1200A’s.

If you want the best DJ headphones money can buy then go for the Pioneer HDJ-2000′s for durability, comfort and big sound, the Allen & Heath Xone XD53′s for excellent Pro DJ sound quality or the Sennheiser HD25′s for accurate sound and lightweight comfort. I’d personally like to own a pair of all three.

Tips for selecting the best DJ headphones:

Sound quality: The sound quality should be crisp and clear with no distortion at loud volumes or muddied with strong bass. You should be able to easily differentiate between highs, mids and lows and I personally like the bass to be a little punchy.

Isolation: The sound coming from your headphones should be heard clearly without outside noise entering. In a loud club environment, you should hear the music you are searching for and cueing up separately from the music playing in club.

Comfort: You want headphones that are comfortable and feel good on your head and your ears. When I DJ, I typically take my headphones off and put them back on as I mix and play. So it’s also important that they feel comfortable around my neck. However, many DJs like to keep their headphones on continuously with one ear on and one ear off making it important that the ear cup swivels, turns, folds or simply sits nicely on your head behind your ear when you want to listen to your headphones with one ear and the monitor with the other.

Build quality: Obviously, you want a pair of headphones that won’t break easily. When you spend a few bucks for good high quality sound you want headphones that will last. You also want them to be easy to transport. Most DJ headphones fold up nicely and slip into an included bag or case.

You can get started most affordably with the Allen & Heath Xone:22 or the Pioneer DJM-250.

For mid-range price but high quality sound and performance, I really like the Allen & Heath Xone:42.

For the top of the line Pro Club Mixers, it’s the Pioneer DJM-900 Nexus and the Allen & Heath Xone DB:4 that are hot in the clubs right now.

And for an all-in-one DJ Controller/DJ Mixer solution, the Allen & Heath Xone:4D is just awesome and the Denon DN-MC6000 is pretty cool too.
